Bus Wars: Megabus v. Greyhound

Currently on MegaBus somewhere between DC and Pittsburgh, PA.  The outlandish price of gas in and around the Metro area has lead me to do some pretty outlandish things myself.  I must admit, it is like being on vaction from myself (rather European like).  After the journey to snow-filled streets in NYC last week on Greyhound, I decided to give Megabus a shot.  I had heard good things, and hey...it is cheap, cheap, cheap.  So, here is my review, or shall we say comparrison of the two. Greyhound had ample indoor waiting room which was nice and warm. However, the station itself didn't have real affordable parking in D.C. ($12.00/ day).  I opted to take the metro train into Union Station and cab (it is too far to walk) from there.  Greyhound shares buses with Peter Pan, and that day was very busy because of the Snowmageddon II in NYC.  I barely managed to get on the bus that I was ticketed for (literally just by luck they pulled me out of lin...

No Such Luck @ IAD

Image
So its St. Paddy's day and one would hope to find luck while traveling. I haven't taken to the air and the adventure is already beginning, albeit I haven't seen too many lucky people just yet. Let's start with Carlos. Now Carlos was Spanish, but hey everyone is a little bit of Irish today...or so I thought. Apparently Carlos hadn't had his bangers and mash today. He wasn't in as festive a mood as I was. Carlos was my shuttle driver from Marriott to IAD. I tried to make light with him, but he remained silent...except for the "damn" which he muttered as he loaded my bags. I arrive at IAD and the lady ahead of me had an unlucky encounter with TSA. I remember the days of traveling alone with an infant, but this woman was trying to pack a BabysRUs super store through security. MAD WOMAN TRAVEL TIP: If traveling with a child under the age of 2...you do not need a car seat, you do not need a stroller system, you do not need a giant diaper bag. Ladies, lad...

Day 1 - 8:30 a.m

Off to a rough start. The alarm didn't wake me as scheduled. 6:05 am call from my boss "where are you?"...Me..."Oh crud". Shaking and hazy I call for a taxi. Luckily the 6:10 departure had been delayed. I manage to cram seven days worth of luggage into two carry on bags (like I said before take carry on). 7:00 am - arrive at AirTran airways terminal at Washington Dulles. There is nobody at the podium (I really don't understand this concept). I try the electronic check in, but since I have dinosaur paper tickets, I have no such luck. No bueno. 7:05 am - I grab the nearest representative that I can find from Jet Blue. She is kind and grabs a man from the break room. He trys to tell me that the flight is full. I say "yes I know, but I'm a ticketed passenger". He is accommodating and encourages me to make a run for it (Dulles is huge and at a walking pace takes about an hour to go from main entrance to gate). Over sized bags in tow, flip flops s...
